I wasn't originally planning on writing a post of this type, but people....ignorant ass people are basically forcing me to. All day today on my instagram feed and my twitter feed, I've seen pictures of pinups in front of flags, girls covering themselves with flags and every post has a cheerful 'Happy Memorial Day' alongside it. Every. Single. One.
This infuriates me. But I'm sure there are thousands of other people who feel thr same way. I think thr majority of Americans have no idea what Memorial Day is actually about. It seems like everyone thinks this holiday is all about a 3 day weekend, the pools opening up and barbeque. Wrong. All of it is wrong.
What is a memorial? A memorial is defined as:
something, especially a structure, established to remind people of a person or event.
Why do we build them? To remind people about something important that has happened in our nation's history. BBQ is not worthy of a national day of remembrance. We celebrate Memorial day in honor of the men and women who sacrificed their lives so that we could have everything we have now. these brave soldiers gave up their lives so that we could live ours with freedom. For most people (especially those either currently or formerly in the armed services) it's not a happy day. They are thinking about their friends and other people they served with that didn't make it to see today. So think about that today while you're at that BBQ, and laying by thr pool.
STOP SAYING HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY.
